This sums up my goal in life quite nicely.
I tell you! Maya Angelou was full of wisdom and has left us with some great nuggets. When I first read this quote it spoke to me because I am a breast cancer survivor. But like Maya said I don’t want to just survive. I want to thrive. I also don’t want my life to be solely about surviving cancer. That’s why this is not a cancer blog per se. I want to follow my passions and be passionate. I also want to show compassion which is what I always did but now I can empathize more with those who are suffering. Cancer can be very humbling. I show compassion by giving of my time and encouraging people who are struggling like I struggled. Last but not least, I want to laugh and I want to look good while doing all of it. 🙂
I want to do good, be good and look good.
When I think about this quote I realize that Maya was talking about surviving life as a black female in America in the 20th century mainly during the Civil Rights Movement. She was an activist and at that time black people were expected to be happy with what they had. I think there are remnants of that notion still around. But she was saying ‘No!. I don’t want to just survive, get by, have a mediocre life. I want to thrive. I want to do good, be good and look good.’ She had a bigger, more vivid vision for her life than merely surviving.
I can relate. My blog topics align with her quote to a T:
Thrive: Living Well
Passion: Living It Up, Living Out of a Suitcase, Words to Live By
Compassion: Living to Give
Humor: Words to Live By, Living It Up
Style: Living with Style
Let’s thrive, be passionate, show compassion, laugh often, and be stylish! The world will be a better place because of it. 🙂
