Living It Up in Wine Country

How Opus One Changed My Life

Wine is everywhere these days. Places that you think wouldn’t even be able to grow grapes are making wine. Texas produces wine and desert places like Morocco also produce wine. I remember visiting Morocco and being offered Moroccan wine. I had no idea there was such a thing. I was taken aback but ordered a glass and was pleasantly surprised at the taste. When I’m shopping it’s amazing to me all of the new labels that I see. It seems like the market is over-saturated. But no matter how many players are in the wine game there are legendary wines. They are highly sought after and have a loyal following. Opus One is one of those wines.

It was the same type of wine I had been drinking prior to Opus One but now my palate had changed. The Opus One ruined me!

I think the first time I’d heard of Opus One was in a Jay-Z song. He was bragging about drinking it so I knew it must be expensive. When I left the San Francisco Bay Area I had a friend who had recently moved to Napa. Whenever I would come to town for business I would extend my stay so we could spend a day wine tasting. Since my friend lived in Napa she learned the really good wineries to visit. Well I was so surprised on one particular visit when I found out that Opus One was on our list. I didn’t even know Opus One was in Napa.

We had gone to a few wineries before we made our way to Opus One. I remember a tasting ranged between $25 to $45 a glass depending on which blend and year you selected. We did one of each. It turned out that the one that was my favorite was the more expensive one. I never fail to like the most expensive offering. LOL

It was a lovely day so we took our wine outside and walked the grounds. After our tasting at Opus One we were scheduled for a tasting at a very famous winery down the street. Can I tell you that after having Opus One, the wine at that other winery tasted like crap?! It was the same type of wine I had been drinking prior to Opus One but now my palate had changed. The Opus One ruined me!

If you are in Napa and you have a chance to visit Opus One. You only live once. Spend what most people spend on a bottle of wine and get a taste at least.

What they say makes Opus One different is that they only pick the best grapes for the wine. They’re motto is “One wine of absolute quality”. If the grapes are bruised or imperfect they aren’t selected. I’m sure there are some other special things they do but whatever it is I am now a believer that more expensive wines can taste better. Don’t get me wrong. I still believe that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good bottle of wine. Not all expensive wines taste good. Not all cheap wines taste bad. But if there’s an expensive wine that is rare and rumored to be the best and I have a chance to taste it, I’m getting a glass.

So Opus One is now my favorite wine. The picture above is from our second visit and that time I bought a bottle (roughly $300) for myself and one for my friend because she never lets me pay for anything when I visit. I bought a new house last year (my first as a single lady) and I opened my bottle when I hosted Thanksgiving dinner. I was able to give everyone in attendance a taste. They absolutely loved it! I was glad that they confirmed what I already knew. It is amazing!

If you are in Napa and you have a chance to visit Opus One. You only live once. Spend what most people spend on a bottle of wine and get a taste at least. You will thank me. Here’s to living it up! Cheers!
